The Grand Ridge Road south of Warragul has always been a pleasant drive, but due to a significant unsealed section around Mt Worth, it was unsuitable to use on Sporting Register outings. That changed last year when the last remaining gravel road section was sealed, opening up several new opportunities for club runs through the hills.
Ray Youlden and Kevin Riley decided to join forces and put a run together that exploited this new stretch of bitumen as well as a selection of other terrific drivers’ roads in the district. It included the section of the Grand Ridge Road from Seaview to Mirboo North through Trida, Hallston and Allambee South, which are little more than place names on a map. A quick morning tea break in Mirboo North enabled our convoy of 16 sporting and classic cars to regroup before returning to Trafalgar via Thorpdale and the scenic route along the Narracan Connection Road and Rogers Road. From Trafalgar, it was a simple run along the highway back to Warragul for lunch at the Country Club.
Ray had booked the Country Club for midday, but was worried that the route might take too long. He need not have worried as everyone arrived with time to spare. John and Alex Weymouth in the Sunbeam Alpine finished their run at Trafalgar, as the route went right past their front door. Similarly, Lachlan and John Fowler in their respective MX5 and Sprite peeled off for home in Yarragon and Darnum. The rest of the cohort lined their vehicles up on the grass outside the Country Club restaurant before moving inside for a meal.
Thankyou to Ray and Kevin for organising this run, it was well attended (despite being Easter Sunday) and appreciated by all who participated.
