With National and Boxing Kangaroo flags a flying, a fairly disjointed convoy of around 30 sporting and classic cars set off from the centre of Drouin for places south. Drivers were following route directions provided by Glenn Campbell which also contained a multiple-choice quiz on Aussie trivia. The route took participants through the picturesque countryside around Hallora and Poowong East before crossing the South Gippsland Highway for a morning tea break at Loch. Several drivers, including the event director, arrived at Loch via a shorter route, but it was interesting to see a number of confused participants arriving in this pretty little town from completely the wrong direction.
The streets of Loch were soon lined with interesting vehicles and the cafe was doing a roaring trade. As usual there were plenty of MGs (including three V8 MGBs) and sporty Mercedes, a couple of Porsches and Jaguars, a classic and a modern Mini Cooper S, hot hatches from VW and Volvo, a couple of Falcon GTs, a pair of Morris Minors, a Mustang convertible, Alfa Spider, Lotus Elan, Mazda RX7, MX5, Ford Capri and early family sedans from Holden, Ford, Volvo and others. Alan and Marg Humphries apologised for bringing their Subaru Forester, but their recalcitrant MINI Cooper wasn?t prepared to start this morning. The Humphries bounced back, however, placing equal first in the Aussie quiz with Mark and Sue McKibbin.
The second half of the run placed more emphasis on navigation, although most participants set off in small groups to enjoy the scenic hills and relatively well-maintained roads around Kongwak and Outrim together. The route then passed through Leongatha South and re-joined the South Gippsland Highway at Koonwarra. From there it was a short run into Meeniyan where lunch arrangements were left up to the individual. There are several caf?s in town, a pizzeria, hotel and even picnic tables in the wide median strip, so there was no shortage of choice.
It was great to so many members enjoying this Australia Day outing in their special vehicles. Thanks once again to Glenn and Pam Campbell for planning the route and bringing it all to fruition.
