It was a great morning for staying home and spoiling mum with breakfast in bed. The rain began not long after dawn in Warragul and seemed well set in for the rest of the day. It was therefore with low expectations that the fairly water-tight Fiat 124 coupe eased out of the garage onto the damp roads for a bit of exercise, taking the long way into town for the monthly Breakfast Club gathering.
A surprising number of sports and classic cars were already in place by 8am, some from the Latrobe Valley and other places further east and south where the showers had not yet reached. John Moore had ridden his motorbike from Leongatha and didn?t strike the rain until passing through Ellinbank ? I?ll bet it was a damp ride home though! Coupes and sedans were the order of the day, but it was nice to see several convertibles making the effort to attend with their roofs up. Des Dillon surprised us all by arriving with passenger in the big roofless Bentley ? I guess if you drive it fast enough you stay dry behind the big windscreen.
Plenty of classic Aussie metal this month with a nice HK Monaro joining our regular participants. Three classic Mustangs weren?t put off by the weather, nor were the usual suspects in their Mercs, BMWs and Porsches. A very tidy MG Magnette was the sole representative of that marque this month, but the Longmore and Longhurst Minis with Bill and Judy Aitken’s Austin A90 and a beautiful Healey 100/4 kept the BMC/Leyland flag flying. Other pommy vehicles included Ian Maud?s classic Range Rover, a handful of Jaguars and a beautifully restored Hillman Imp. There were a couple of MX5s, a 1940?s Chevrolet, an International Scout and even a Bedford tray truck. Numbers may have been down to around 40 vehicles, but the range of vehicles was still impressive and those members present enjoyed the opportunity to chew the fat with fellow enthusiasts, as we do each month.
