I was up early to watch the 5:50am start to the Bathurst 12-Hour production sports car race, took the dog for a lap of the block at dawn, then after throwing some fuel into the Cooper S, it was off for a spirited romp around some deserted back roads before arriving at the Breakfast gathering a few minutes after 8am. It looked like half the Club had arrived before me, leaving only a couple of spaces in the southern section available. During the next hour or so, a magnificent assortment of immaculate classic and sporting vehicles shuffled into place making it one of our biggest monthly gatherings with over 80 cars on display.
There were plenty of classic sports cars from MG, Triumph, Lotus, Fiat, Sunbeam and Austin Healey all with their roofs stowed away, as well as a more modern group including Porsche, Ferrari, BMW, Mazda, Toyota and Ford showing their interpretation of the sporting theme. A new visitor to our ranks was a bright yellow JWF Milano GT, a late 50s / early 60s Australian-made fibreglass kit car based on the MGA chassis and components. This one had a bit more grunt delivered by a supercharged MGB engine.
As usual there was a healthy selection of muscle cars including at least 4 Mustangs, an early Camaro, a Corvette, a 6-Pack RT Charger, Falcon GT and a very clean and standard-looking HZ Premier which is capable of 10 second quarter times at Calder Raceway. Ron Brooks drove his twin-turbo Chev-powered AC Cobra replica over from Phillip Island for a bit of excitement, and at the other end of the spectrum there was a handful of Minis (ranging from mild too wild) as well as a BMW MINI which really isn?t !
There were plenty of hi-performance coupes such as Locky Fowler?s 240Z, Ray Youlden?s M3 and Graham Longmore?s beautiful Aston Martin DBS; some immaculate classic saloons by Jaguar, Daimler and Mercedes and even a lovely little Hot-Rod with flames!
Bill and Judy Aitken had their prize-winning Austin A70 Hampshire Ute on display and for lovers of the earlier models there was also a very tidy 2.5 litre Riley sedan.
As usual, there was something to interest all tastes, even a BMW motorcycle for those who prefer two wheels.
