Another beautiful Spring morning in Warragul enticed the owners of about eighty sports and classic cars to?attend our gathering this month. As usual, it wasn?t uncommon to find participants who had driven considerable distances to be part of this event and we certainly appreciate the efforts of those who travelled from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley and even as far a Sale in the east.
It?s always a pleasure to catch up with our regular participants, who with their special vehicles form the backbone of our monthly gatherings. This month we seemed to attract more Italian sports and classic cars than usual and that?s never a bad thing. A gorgeous black Ferrari 550 Maranello attracted many admiring glances, as did Mark McKibbin?s 1920?s Lancia Lambda with its extraordinary long wheelbase and spacious interior. Between these two extremes there were a couple of Fiat 124 Spiders, a 124 coupe, an Alfa Spider and Alfetta GTV as well as a dark blue Lancia Fulvia making its debut appearance at this event. Our Triumph owners were also out in force and almost managed to secure their own area of the carpark with a pair of TR4s, a TR3, and TR6. Other British classics included several MGAs and MGBs, an MG Magnette, a TD, a couple of TFs and a more recent MGF. There was also Graham Longmore?s impressive D-type replica and Keith Williams debuted his recently restored 1949 Austin 8 Tourer. Several Jaguars, a couple of Sprites, a big Healey, Ian Mallow?s Lotus Elan, the Weymouth Sunbeam Alpine and a pre-war Vauxhall tourer helped swell the ranks of popular English models.
As usual there were plenty of classic Mustangs on display, a light green ?67 fastback which we hadn?t seen before, attracted a lot of attention, as did the massive 1950?s Oldsmobile, ?Chev convertible ?and Richard Rowley?s Chrysler Saratoga which really do have a style of their own.
There were of course plenty of Porsches, BMWs and Mercedes, but it?s more unusual to see a Borgward Isabella and a Renault Floride at events such as this. Aussie muscle car classics were represented by a pair of Falcon GTs and a very tidy HG Monaro, whilst the Japanese contingent included several MX5s, a rally-prepared WRX, Ian Holdsworth?s RX7 turbo competition car, a Toyota Supra, Honda S2000 and Tony Pisa?s tiny Diahatsu Compagnolo convertible.
For those more interested in two wheels there was a V-twin Vincent classic bike that gave an extra dimension to our November gathering.
