OPEN GARAGE AND GARDEN – Shane Slatter’s at Yarragon, Sunday 15th May.

More often than not, what happens inside a garage, stays inside; but with the Sporting Register?s Open Garage visits, members enjoy the rare opportunity to see behind the roll-a-doors at genuine situations where enthusiasts build, maintain or service their own classic cars ? or in Shane?s case, his classic car collection.

Shane, Linda and Lachlan moved onto their magnificent 10 acre property between Yarragon and Trafalgar only about 2 years ago, but it obviously didn?t taken them long to stamp their own identity on it. ?The stand-alone garage/showroom/storage area is fully equipped with its own kitchen and bathroom and is tastefully decorated with automobilia, model aircraft, posters and other objects of interest. It houses maybe half of Shane?s impressive Jaguar collection which includes an un-restored early left-hand-drive E-type coupe, a late model V12 E-type roadster, a replica of the Goss/Hahne Bathurst-winning XJ-S, an ex-consular-general car from WA, bits and pieces that might one-day morph into a D-type replica and a wild-looking E-type racer project buried deep beneath a pile of Jaguar and light aircraft components. A separate, well-equipped workshop contains another D-type replica spaceframe chassis, this one with suspension partially attached, and a fibreglass D-type body mould. Another half a dozen or so Jaguar sedans from the 1990s or later, were parked around the garages with oddities such as a grey Fergie tractor, several motorcycles and light aircraft also on display to interest those who were Jaguared out.

The property can also boast an extensive and beautifully designed garden which includes a large lake with boat ramp, a long curved driveway lined with deciduous trees, formal garden beds with water features and a great variety of both native and exotic specimen trees. Shane and Linda, together with Shane?s mother maintain the gardens and have opened them for local garden club visits.

The Sporting Register members certainly appreciated Shane and Linda?s hospitality, especially the extensive morning tea, and it was terrific to see our own fine collection of sporting and classic cars parked alongside the drive way.

Our thanks to Shane, Linda and Lachlan for their invitation and hospitality. ?The Club recognises the enormous amount of work that goes into preparing for such an event and appreciates the opportunity to add such outings to our calendar.
