From The Passenger Seat ? Jenny Schmidt
From past experience I know that you usually get only one of two possible weather conditions for viewing motorkhanas; hot and dusty or wet and muddy. As an exception to this rule, and despite those competitors who came from Melbourne telling tales of driving through heavy rain, Sunday at Lardner Park was fine and dry.
Fun and enjoyment were the keywords for the day. Anyone over the age of 12 could have a go. There were several young lads who took advantage of this and were seen determinedly tackling the courses with dad in the passenger seat offering guidance or just hanging on.
At briefing, we were warned that the site was slippery and boy, was it!. This evened out the field, with ?mum?s shopping cart? car that chugged around slowly and steadily having as much chance of getting a reasonable time as those more powerful vehicles and even the Specials whose handbrake turns and bursts of power left them spinning wheels or skidding into flags.
Results:
There were 10 clubs competing for the Club trophy and 52 individuals competing for class and outright honours. The Sporting Register had 7 members competing, some of whom had never driven? in a grass motorkhana before.
The coveted Club Trophy had to be shared this year between the Huntingdale Auto Club and the Peugeot Car Club, both ending up on equal points. The Sporting Register came in next with a very creditable score, just pipping the Holden Sporting Car Club by one point.
Steve Schmidt won his class in the Bugeye Sprite and David Richards came second in the Novice Class driving his father?s Mini Deluxe. All our drivers acquitted themselves well, with very few penalties accrued from hitting flags or going in the wrong direction. Ray and David Youlden notched up some of the fastest individual times in their class on several tests, but consistency on the slippery grass was hard to achieve in the powerful M3. Glenn was using the 911?s superior traction to good effect, especially on some of the more open tests, but found the 911 a bit of a handful on the tighter tests. After a disappointing start (hitting a flag on the first test), Ian Maud soon got into the swing of things in the MR2, and posted some very impressive times on several tests in the MR2.
