AUSTRALIA DAY MYSTERY TOUR ? Wednesday 26th January

Perhaps it may have been a bit warm for some, but about 30 classic and sporting cars with their enthusiastic occupants bedecked in Aussie flags and regalia, assembled at the Warragul Showgrounds for this year?s annual Australia Day Mystery Run. Glenn and Pam Campbell organised a Covid-safe event that saw Stage One of the tour heading out through the backroads south of the highway then into the hills around Allambee before returning to Yarragon for a morning tea break.

Stage Two’s directions which identified the final destination, were handed out in Yarragon. Your correspondent and our ?pathfinder? Ray Youlden made an early break to find a suitable photo setting and to claim a spot at the picnic lunch location whilst the rest of the pack finished their coffees and cakes before heading off. This 63km stage took participants out through Shady Creek towards Willow Grove, then on through Hill End and the magnificent drive up through the forest around Fumina to Icy Creek and into Noojee. Unfortunately, not everyone enjoyed a traffic-free run through the forest, as they encountered slower vehicles with a stream of cars behind and few overtaking opportunities.

Noojee was a hive of activity, the Heritage Centre (old train) and the pub seemed to be well patronised by motorcycle groups and other visitors. Ray, in the meantime had secured a lovely shady spot by the river where John and Helen O?Grady could set up their Mighty Boy with BBQ trailer for our club members to use for their picnic lunches.

The Mystery Tour wouldn?t be the same without the Aussie Trivia Quiz which is completed enroute, and this year?s winner was Stephen Hoole who won a blow-up Aussie beachball and plastic mug.

The day was one of the most adrenalin /exhilarating drives I have had the pleasure to do for a while, whilst I had a huntsman run amok over the steering wheel during the first part to Yarragon, I managed to knock it to the floor (out of site out of mind )
Unfortunately, on 2nd stage to Noojee it managed to use the top of the dash in front of me as a race track – backwards and forwards then stopped in middle of the driver’s side eyeballing me, and I was all the while driving with one eye on it and one on on road ahead. Anyhow, anyone who has experienced a huntsman drop from their sun visor will know exactly what I might have been feeling. This dance went on for some 10-20 minutes, or at least to Fumina South from Araluen Rd. In hindsight I should have pulled up and tried to deal with it, however, I did not want to lose it again, so I had to wait till it decided to take a crawl along the driver’s door belt mould so I could then send it on it?s journey. Apologies if I got too close at times to the Lotus owner in front of me”.
