JANUARY BREAKFAST CLUB, Warragul CBD ? Sunday 10th January

The Sporting Register?s 2016 began where last year?s Breakfast Clubs left off with well over 100 sports and classic cars filing into the Warragul Woolies carpark from well before 8am. It was great to see so many classic sports cars arriving with roofs off, although some drivers from out of the district didn?t account for the lower early morning temperatures usually experienced in Warragul. Ron Brooks left balmy Phillip Island driving his AC Cobra in shorts and t-shirt, but was wishing he had some extra layers on as the temperature steadily dropped on his way inland.
As usual the MG fraternity were out in force with T-types, Midgets, Bs, BGTs and a beautiful red MGA Coupe with cream interior, that David Anderson has just finished restoring. The Triumphs were also well represented with TR3, TR4 and TR6 models. There seemed to be more big Healeys at this event than usual, with a range of both four and six cylinder versions on display. A V12 mid-engined Ferrari attracted much attention, as did a magnificent range of early and late model Porsche 911 types, many of which we hadn?t seen before. A rare Reliant Scimitar with Rover V8 power made an appearance and the Club?s three Fiat 124 Spiders were all in attendance with a couple of Alfa GTVs and a Lancia HPE for company. Graham Longmore drove his XK120 down from Tyers helping represent classic Jaguar sports cars together with a beautiful early model E-type coupe that made its debut appearance a couple of months ago. The ranks of Japanese sports cars continued to grow this month with several MX5s supported by a pair of very tidy early RX7s and Mark Sanford?s Skyline GTR.
Mercedes and BMW roadsters, coupes and sedans are always well represented at our gatherings and this month was no exception with a wide variety of models covering the last six decades on display. American and Aussie muscle cars were solidly supported with three different models of Falcon GTs, a brace of Mustangs, a couple of Corvettes, a Pontiac GTO and a Plymouth Roadrunner.
Imported and locally built sedans and small cars such as a 1948 Dodge sedan, a 1950?s Ford Fairlane, EH Holdens, Minis, a VW Type 3 sedan and Beetle were present and served to remind us of a bygone era of family motoring.
There?s always something out of the ordinary at these events, occasionally we get to see commercial vehicles like John Fowler?s old Dodge tray truck and Bill Aitken?s Austin A70 Ute, we also attract the odd classic hot rod, but it was a surprise to see a highly modified V8 Toyota RAV4 competition car in our midst that would have looked just as much at home on the Dakar Rally.
Mark McKibbin drove his 1913 Peugeot Bebe in from Rokeby and was joined by several well-aged vintage and veteran cars including a Delage, a Vauxhall, a Bayliss Thomas and a Chev Tourer sporting original Fowler Signs lettering on the unrestored bodywork.
