The morning may have been very cold, but for the first time in nearly three weeks, the roads were dry, the air was still and the cloud obscuring the sun, high. This must have been the opportunity car enthusiasts were waiting for, because somewhere between? 80 and 90 sports and classic cars broke their ?cabin-fever? with a run to Warragul?s monthly Breakfast Club gathering. The car park began filling before 8am with a pair of Italian exotics in the form of a Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari Dino GT4, cruising in and selecting a couple of prime spots. The positioning of vehicles in the car park is completely haphazard, but it was interesting to see a row of mainly roofless British sports cars lined up on one side of the main thoroughfare, with Italian, American, German and others on the other. It was noted that there was an unusually high percentage of British cars at this gathering, they far outnumbered the representation from any other nation. There were Jaguars, MGs, Austin Healeys, Minis, Triumphs, Lotii ? one of which was a beautiful, NZ-made Lotus 11 replica, a pair of Hillman Hunter GTs, a Sunbeam Alpine, Vauxhall Velox convertible and a Morris Minor.
Five Mustangs, a couple of Corvettes, a Falcon GT, Walkinshaw Commodore and XU1 Torana impressed the muscle-car fraternity and there was plenty of German horse power from Mercedes, Porsche and BMW balancing it out. ?A bright blue HR Holden, an LH/LX Torana and an early Valiant represented the Aussie Family car, with an International Scout and a beautifully restored short-wheelbase Toyota Landcruiser adding some 4×4 flavour.
There were very few Japanese models on display, however, a couple of the ever-popular MX5s, a WRX?and a Toyota Celica were there to please those with an oriental palate.
It was interesting to see that Shannons Insurance requested our permission to set up an information stand at this month?s gathering ? word must be getting around about the success and support this event has been gathering from around the Gippsland region.
