Our first winter meeting for the year and yes, it was it was dark early and quite cool, but at least it stayed dry allowing our?feature car to be driven to and from the meeting without spoiling its immaculate presentation.
Prior to Ed Denovan?s flirtation with a bright red, Italian Alfa GTV, his automotive affectations were directed solely towards his 1969 Cypress Green, Triumph TR6. ?This car is a very early TR6, being number 673 of around 95,000 that were produced between 1968 and 1976. Designated the CP model, these early cars were rated at 150bhp and fitted with a 4-speed gearbox that had an electrically switched overdrive operating on second, third and fourth gears. Later cars lost out on overdrive for second gear and ran a detuned version of the Lucas injected 2.5 litre 6-cylinder engine, whilst those destined for the USA were Solex- carburetted and rated at a mere 104bhp.
Ed’s?car was shipped to Australia when new and came with an alloy hardtop which may explain why it was designated as a coupe when first registered. The TR6 was a logical successor to the TR4 and the interim (and now quite rare) TR5. It has classic Triumph styling cues, leather trim, walnut dash and grunty performance that?accelerates it from 0 to 100km/h in 8.2 seconds, and onwards to a top speed of 190 km/h.
Ed purchased this lovingly looked after classic from its prior owner who had spent more than $34,000 on it in his 6-years of ownership ? with receipts to prove it! It?s had its brakes and suspension upgraded by fitting 4-spot Toyota Hilux calipers, and it runs Koni shockers with slightly lowered springs all round to control the Minilite-style alloy wheels. During the last 12 months or so, the fuel injection system has been refurbished (in the UK) and a couple of the panels have been resprayed. The Triumph looks and sounds magnificent. Understandably, Ed thoroughly enjoys driving this car, and of course always has the option of open or closed touring, so long as Di is in agreement.
