With daylight saving finally over, the longer mornings are allowing people to make better use of the early hours. This was certainly the case for our April Breakfast gathering. When your editor arrived in the inconspicuous, Fiat 124 rally coupe just after 8am, the southern section of Warragul Woolworths? carpark was already full and the adjoining spaces in the main area were filling fast. A rough count at around 9:30 put the total number of special cars at about 70, there were also a few bikes including John Althuizen?s Ducati . Des Dillon had the aero-engined Hispano Suiza in place early, parking it near the recently registered, but not quite finished, pre-war Fiat special built by Doug Armour. Mark McKibbin, however, trumped these two veterans when he turned up in his Sizaire Naudin which was built prior to WW1.

As usual there a few vehicles we hadn?t seen before which were making their debut. Mark Sanford brought along his newish Alfa Spider which had recently been added to his classic collection, and Vince? and Joanne Bourke? showed off their fuel injected Rover Mini that must have the most crowded engine bay of any classic Mini. Mike Whitford introduced his ?new? BMW 635CSI (in black with the manual gearbox of course) which had been very well looked after by an enthusiast owner in Sydney. There was an impressive collection of Porsches this month, many different models and eras, but the most impressive was Jane Vollebregt?s black GT3, which was on a run this weekend to blow the cobwebs out.? Jane and David Anderson also had on display their tatty old Commodore which they will soon be driving on the Shitbox Rally from Perth to Darwin.??
There were 3 Series 1 Toyota MR2s at our gathering this month, a couple of Capris, several Sprites and Triumphs, a handful of MGBs including the recently refurbished roadster belonging to Mal Darby and the V8 coupe of John Moore. A veritable stable of Mustangs provided some muscle, as did a pair of Falcon GTs , a very tidy early Monaro GTS and a HSV Commodore.
The weather was perfect and people took the opportunity to wander around appreciating the cars on display and talking with their owners. It?s interesting to look at the detail touches on some cars and the superb quality of workmanship in their build or restoration. You also get to see some very basic inventiveness such as Lloyd Shaw?s ?handbrake? for the FJ!
